Sara Sorribes Tormo stayed on track in defence of her title by reaching the quarter-finals of the Abierto Akron Zapopan in Guadalajara, Mexico, late on Thursday, while Camila Osorio and Sloane Stephens, the only other seeds left in the draw, also advanced.

Sorribes Tormo, the No 3 seed from Spain and also the highest seed left standing, needed just 67 minutes to rout Magdalena Frech from Poland, 6-0 6-2.

The Spaniard dropped her serve just once in the match while converting 6 of the 11 break points she had on the Pole’s serve.

Her opponent for a place in the semi-final will be Marie Bouzkova from the Czech Republic, who reached the quarter-finals on Wednesday with a 7-6(2) 6-2 win over Italian Lucia Bronzetti.

At the top of the draw, Daria Saville and Sloane Stephens will play each other for a place in the semi-finals, with the Australian coming through her second-round clash against American Caroline Dolehide, 6-1 6-3, in 67 minutes on Thursday.

Saville reaped more rewards when it came to winning points off her second serves, taking 71% to the American’s 26% while, in terms of break points, the Aussie saved 3 of the 4 break points she faced and converted 5 of the 6 break points on Dolehide’s serve.

Meanwhile, in her second-round match-up, Stephens, the 6th seed from the USA, defeated France’s Chloe Paquet, 7-5 6-4, in an hour and 51 minutes.

Stephens put 77% of her first-serves in, compared to Paquet’s 55%, and won 58% of her first-serve points to the Frenchwoman’s 46%.

While Stephens lost her serve 3 times during the course of the match, she also broke Paquet 5 times.

On Thursday, in the last match of the day, the 4th-seeded Osorio came from a set down to win against another American, Hailey Baptiste, a qualifier, 1-6 6-3 6-3, in 2 hours and 4 minutes.

After Osorio put just 48 percent of her first serves in play during the opening set, she raised her game to 58 percent in the second, and 80 percent in the third set.

Osorio will take on Anna Kalinskaya after the Russian reached the quarters on Wednesday with a 6-4 0-6 6-4 win over China’s Xinyu Wang.

Meanwhile, right at the bottom of the draw, Slovakia’s Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova and another Chinese, Wang Qiang, will play each other for a semi-final berth.

Schmiedlova defeated Russia’s Anastasia Potapova, 6-3 7-6(5), while Wang ousted Harmony Tan from France, 6-4 6-2, in their respective round-of-16 clashes.
