Four singles matches were completed at the Abierto Akron Zapopan tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico, on Wednesday, setting the line-up for two of the four quarter-final matches.
With the early departure of top seeds Emma Raducanu and Madison Keys, amongst others, there are only 3 remaining seeds in contention – defending champion Sara Sorribes Tormo (3), Camila Osorio (4) and Sloane Stephens (6), all of whom were not in action on Wednesday, leaving unseeded players to contest quarter-final slots.
Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya emerged victorious in a double-fault-filled match, beating China’s Xinyu Wang, 6-4 0-6 6-4, in the second round.
Kalinskaya served 9 double-faults and just one ace, while Wang fired 8 aces against 11 double-faults.
Neither had put more than 52 percent of her first serves into play, and neither player managed to win half of her second-serve points.
Kalinskaya awaits the winner of the match between 4th-seeded Camila Osorio from Colombia and American qualifier Hailey Baptiste, who play on Thursday.
Marie Bouzkova from the Czech Republic defeated Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti, 7-6(2) 6-2, and will play the winner of the second round match between Sorribes Tormo, the 3rd seed from Spain and now the highest seed left in the draw, and Poland’s Magdalena Frech, also on Thursday’s schedule.
China’s Wang Qiang got past France’s Harmony Tan, 6-4 6-2, to reach the quarter-finals where she will take on Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, who beat Russia’s Anastasia Potapova, 6-3 7-6(5).
Schmiedlova led Potapova 6-3, 4-1 before the Russian won 4 straight games to threaten a comeback, but the Slovakian held on to wrap up victory in a tight second-set tiebreak.
